the so-called 'canon tables' of the christian gospels are an absolutely remarkable feature of the early, late antique, and medieval christian manuscript cultures of east and west, the invention of which is commonly attributed to eusebius and dated to first decades of the fourth century ad. intended to host a technical device for structuring, organizing, and navigating the four gospels united in a single codex - and, in doing so, building upon and bringing to completion previous endeavours - the canon tables were apparently from the beginning a highly complex combination of text, numbers and images, that became an integral and fixed part of all the manuscripts containing the four gospels as sacred scripture of the christians and can be seen as exemplary for the formation, development and spreading of a specific christian manuscript culture across east and west ad 300 and 800.

in the footsteps of carl nordenfalk's masterly publication of 1938 and few following contributions, this book offers an updated overview on the topic of 'canon tables' in a comparative perspective and with a precise look at their context of origin, their visual appearance, their meaning, function and their usage in different times, domains, and cultures.

a landmark work of literary criticism northrop frye's anatomy of criticism is the magnum opus of one of the most important and influential literary theorists of the twentieth century. breaking with the practice of close reading of individual texts, frye seeks to describe a common basis for understanding the full range of literary forms by examining archetypes, genres, poetic language, and the relations among the text, the reader, and society. using a dazzling array of examples, he argues that understanding "the structure of literature as a total form" also allows us to see the profoundly liberating effect literature can have.

  • literature and the law of nations, 1580-1680 is a literary history of international law in the age of shakespeare, milton, grotius, and hobbes. seeking to revise the ways scholars understand early modern english literature in relation to the history of international law, it argues that scholars of law and literature have tacitly accepted specious but politically consequential assumptions about whether international law is "real" law. literature and the law of nations shows how major writers of the english renaissance deployed genres like epic, tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, and history to solidify the canonical subjects and objects of modern international law. by demonstrating how renaissance literary genres informed modern categories like public international law, private international law, international legal personality, and human rights, the book over its seven chapters and conclusion helps early modern literary scholars think anew about the legal entailments of genre and scholars in law and literature long accustomed to treating all law with a single broad brush better confront the distinct complexities, fault lines, and variegated histories at the heart of international law.

(来源indie) (1)'> the oxford history of classical reception (ohcrel) is designed to offer a comprehensive investigation of the numerous and diverse ways in which literary texts of the classical world have been responded to and refashioned by english writers. covering the full range of english literature from the early middle ages to the present day, ohcrel both synthesizes existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge new research, employing an international team of expert contributors for each of the volumes.

ohcrel endeavours to interrogate, rather than inertly reiterate, conventional assumptions about literary 'periods', the processes of canon-formation, and the relations between literary and non-literary discourse. it conceives of 'reception' as a complex process of dialogic exchange and, rather than offering large cultural generalizations, it engages in close critical analysis of literary texts. it explores in detail the ways in which english writers' engagement with classical literature casts as much light on the classical originals as it does on the english writers' own cultural context.

leo bersani: living theory chronologically follows the development of bersani's thought from his engagement in the 1960s and 1970s with french and american modernist fiction and his early articulations of poststructuralist theory (derrida, deleuze, foucault, blanchot), before moving to his work on psychoanalysis and to his groundbreaking formulations of what would become queer theory in the 1990s. the final chapter proposes a dialogue between bersanian ethics/aesthetics and the recent emergence of disability theory.

  • in this book, jaime rodr guez matos proposes the "formless" as a point of departure in thinking through the relationship between politics and time. thinking through both literary and political writings around the cuban revolution, rodr guez matos explores the link between abstract symbolic procedures and various political experiments that have sought to give form to a principle of sovereignty based on the category of representation. in doing so, he proposes the formless as the limit of modern and contemporary reflections on the meaning of politics while exploring the philosophical consequences of a formless concept of temporality for the critique of metaphysics.

rodr guez matos takes the writing and thought of jos lezama lima as the guiding thread in exploring the possibility of a politicity in which time is imagined beyond the disciplining functions it has had throughout the metaphysical tradition--a time of the absence of time, in which the absence of time no longer means eternity.

(来源indiebound) (1)'> in probability designs, karin kukkonen proposes a new perspective on the complex role of predictions and probabilities in the dynamics of literary narrative. predictive processing, an emerging account of cognition in neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy, provides the theoretical backdrop for an investigation of how literary texts shape readers' expectations and experience. through deft analysis of the literary canon in a variety of cultures and languages, she constructs a comprehensive model of probability in a novel's plots, immersive appeal, and potential for reflection. linking predictive processing to the idea that culture and cognition always develop in tandem, kukkonen then sketches a place for literature and literary form in this exchange - a mode of exploratory thinking that takes language and writing to the next level.

  • (来源indiebound) (1)'> there are things we routinely say that may strike us as literally false but that we are nonetheless reluctant to give up. this might be something mundane, like the way we talk about the sun setting in the west (it is the earth that moves), or it could be something much deeper, like engaging in talk that is ostensibly about numbers despite believing that numbers do not literally exist. rather than regard such behaviour as self-defeating, a "fictionalist" is someone who thinks that this kind of discourse is entirely appropriate, even helpful, so long as we treat what is said as a useful fiction, rather than as the sober truth.

"fictionalism" can be broadly understood as a view that uses a notion of pretense or fiction in order to resolve certain puzzles or problems that otherwise do not necessarily have anything to do with literature or fictional creations. within contemporary analytic philosophy, fictionalism has been on the scene for well over a decade and has matured during that time, growing in popularity. there are now myriad competing views about fictionalism and consequently the discussion has branched out into many more subdisciplines of philosophy. yet there is widespread disagreement on what philosophical fictionalism actually amounts to and about how precisely it ought to be pursued. this volume aims to guide these discussions, collecting some of the most up-to-date work on fictionalism and tracing the view's development over the past decade. after a detailed discussion in the book's introductory chapter of how philosophers should think of fictionalism and its connection to metaontology more generally, the remaining chapters provide readers with arguments for and against this view from leading scholars in the fields of epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, and others.

  • to what extent, and in what manner, do storytelling practices accommodate nonhuman subjects and their modalities of experience, and how can contemporary narrative study shed light on interspecies interactions and entanglements? in narratology beyond the human, david herman addresses these questions through a cross-disciplinary approach to post-darwinian narratives concerned with animals and human-animal relationships. herman considers the enabling and constraining effects of different narrative media, examining a range of fictional and nonfictional texts disseminated in print, comics and graphic novels, and film. in focusing on techniques such as the use of animal narrators, alternation between human and nonhuman perspectives, the embedding of stories within stories, and others, the book explores how specific strategies for portraying nonhuman agents both emerge from and contribute to broader attitudes toward animal life. herman argues that existing frameworks for narrative inquiry must be modified to take into account how stories are interwoven with cultural ontologies, or understandings of what sorts of beings populate the world and how they relate to humans.

showing how questions of narrative bear on ideas of species difference and assumptions about animal minds, narratology beyond the human underscores our inextricable interconnectedness with other forms of creatural life and suggests that stories can be used to resituate imaginaries of human action in a more-than-human world.
